With Stage 2 Watering Restrictions in effect as of Aug. 4 the City is encouraging residents to let their lawns turn golden to help conserve water and win prizes.
Port Coquitlam residents are invited to participate in the City's Golden Streets contest this summer for a chance to win one of three $100 gift cards to a local Port Coquitlam business or win $150 gift card for a block party in your neighbourhood.
To participate, residents can submit photos of their maintained, but not watered (dormant), golden (brown) lawns as a neighbourhood or on their own, by tagging the City's social media channels on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter by Sept., 15. Entries can also be made online at portcoquitlam.ca/wateritright. One entry per household.
Stage 2 Watering Restrictions are in effect for the Metro Vancouver region, which means all residential and non-residential lawn watering is prohibited for the rest of the season. With hot and dry weather in the long-range forecast, the City is reminding residents to save water for where it's needed most, such as cooking, cleaning, and drinking.
Water usage can increase by 50% in summer and early fall which is largely due to lawn watering. The region_wide watering regulations are an effective way to help use drinking water wisely.
Conserve Water
Residents are reminded that it is important to continue to reduce water use by:
- Putting leaves and bark mulch around shrubs and trees to hold in moisture.
- Water vegetable gardens in the morning, near the roots, and by hand.
- Wash cars for safety reasons only.
- Sweep driveways or decks with a broom instead of the hose.
- Install a shut-off valve on your hose so it only runs when in use.
- Keep a jug of cool water in the fridge, instead of running the tap until it cools.
- Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or washing dishes.
- Take shorter showers.
- Run full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher
- Install low-flow toilets as they account for 30% of indoor use.
- When replacing appliances, choose low-flow, high efficiency options.
Photos for the Golden Streets Contest will be accepted until Sept., 15, 2023. For full contest details and more information about watering restrictions, visit portcoquitlam.ca/wateritright.
