STATEMENT: Hate-Motivated Incident In City Of Port Coquitlam

Port Coquitlam, BC - September 25, 2023...On Sept. 23, 2023 the City received a report of a hate motivated poster that was posted in the community at a bus stop.

The City of Port Coquitlam condemns all symbols of hate. The City values being a welcoming and caring community for all persons.

"As soon as it was brought to our attention, Bylaw officers immediately searched the area and all bus stops in the surrounding area, to remove the posters but no signs were present. Perhaps, it was removed by someone else in the community," said Mayor Brad West. "This vile garbage isn't welcome in our community, or anywhere else. We strive and continue to work on building the bonds of our community and breaking down barriers, promoting all the diversity our city has."

The City of Port Coquitlam condemns this in the strongest terms and promotes an environment without hate. The City appreciates the community for sharing their concerns and for bringing it to their attention.

Coquitlam RCMP are aware of the incident and encourage residents to report incidents such as this to the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550. A file number for this incident has been opened for the public to report to #23-25827 if any more signs are found.

What Can You Do?

The Coquitlam RCMP began collecting reports on hate-motivated incidents in response to the rise of cases motivated by hate based on race, gender or sexual orientation.

Reporting these behaviours - whether experienced or witnessed - is important for public safety. Condemning all forms of hate supports a culture of inclusivity and belonging.

How to Report a Hate Crime or Incident

  • Report hate-motivated incidents at Report.RCMP.ca: Hate-motivated incidents are when a person is targeted by another person motivated by hate in a way that is not a criminal offence.
  • Report hate crimes in person to Coquitlam RCMP or by calling 604-945-1550: Hate crimes are criminal offences that are motivated, or suspected to be motivated, by hate.
  • Report hate crimes in progress to 911.
  • Report a hate crime anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visiting solvecrime.ca.
  • The Province of B.C. also provides information about hate crimes and reporting.
