The City of Port Coquitlam is advising residents, businesses, and visitors of temporary road closures on Saturday, December 6 from 4:00–7:00 p.m. to accommodate the 2nd Annual Parade of Lights taking place in the downtown area.
The event begins at 5:00 p.m. at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) and will feature a procession of decorated City vehicles, community groups, and local organizations travelling through the City centre. The Parade of Lights is part of the City’s Winter in the City seasonal programming, is presented rain or shine and offers a family-friendly holiday experience.
Free pre-parade activities will be offered by NorthStar Development from 1:00–5:00 p.m. in Leigh Square and at the Livy & Porthaven Presentation Centre, including photos with Santa, hot cocoa, winter-themed games, festive displays, and the NorthStar Express mini holiday train. Additional family activities, skating, crafts, and holiday treats will be available at PCCC before and after the parade.
Road Closures
These closures are necessary to ensure public safety and support event operations for the annual parade, which will travel through the City centre beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic between 4:00–7:00 p.m.:
- Shaughnessy Street – Kelly Ave. to McAllister Ave.
- Leigh Square Place – east of Shaughnessy St.
- Donald Street – Wilson Ave. to McAllister Ave.
- Whyte Ave. at Shaughnessy St.
- McAllister Avenue – east of Shaughnessy St. to Mary Hill Rd.
- McAllister Avenue – west of Shaughnessy St. to the southbound alleyway
- Mary Hill Road – McAllister Ave. to Kelly Ave.
- Wilson Ave. – Shaughnessy St. to Mary Hill Rd.
The PCCC parkade entry off Kelly Ave. will also be closed during this period. Parking access will remain available via Kingsway Ave.
Detour Routes
Motorists are encouraged to use the following routes:
- Wilson Ave. (east of Mary Hill Rd. and west of Shaughnessy St.)
- Mary Hill Rd. – Wilson Ave. to Kingsway Ave.
- Maple St. – Kingsway Ave. to Wilson Ave.
- Kingsway Ave. – Mary Hill Rd. to Maple St.
- Shaughnessy Underpass – open at Elgin Ave. west/east
- Local access to Marpole Ave., Whyte Ave., McAllister Ave., and Elgin Ave. via Maple St.
Travel Planning
Residents are asked to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and consider transit, walking, or cycling. Event-goers will find free parking available at several key locations, including:
- Port Coquitlam Community Centre
- Gates Park
- Legion Branch #133 (Elgin Ave. and Kingsway Ave.)
- Kingsway Avenue at Mary Hill Road
