Hyde Creek Drainage and Culvert Upgrades

The City is redesigning how Hyde Creek flows beneath Coast Meridian Road and Lincoln Avenue, replacing two aging culverts with clear span bridges to reduce flooding and support a healthier creek.

Project Overview

The City is designing improvements to Hyde Creek to help reduce flooding during heavy rainfall and improve the creek's ability to carry stormwater safely through the neighbourhood.

In 2025, the City completed a detailed engineering study to better understand flooding along the creek. The study found that replacing two existing culverts with larger clear span bridges would significantly improve water flow and reduce flooding in the surrounding area.

Future improvements to the creek channel are also planned to further increase flood protection over the long term.

Why the design is changing

From a narrow culvert to an open creek

A culvert forces the creek through a pipe beneath the road, which limits how much water can pass during a storm. A clear span bridge lets the creek keep its natural width and stream bed, so more water flows through and fish can move freely.

TodayExisting culvert: The creek passes through a narrow pipe. During heavy rain the pipe cannot carry all the water, which raises the risk of flooding upstream and around the road.
PlannedClear span bridge: The bridge spans the full creek, so water moves freely, capacity increases, and fish can pass through more easily. No pipe or support sits in the water.

Where the work is happening

The project replaces the existing culverts at two road crossings along Hyde Creek. Both will become clear span bridges.

Full Scope of Work

Alongside the two bridges, the project includes paving, and replacement of curb and gutter, sidewalks, storm main, sanitary main, and watermain. Combining this work reduces disruption and renews the underground utilities at the same time.
