Notice
Every year, salmon return to the Coquitlam River to spawn. Salmon are continuing to make their way up the river, and many have now returned to the earth. What an incredible life cycle it is!
Some things to keep in mind during salmon spawning season:
- Notice a strong smell? It may be from the salmon spawn, even if you aren't right beside the river
- Minimize disturbances by staying out of the river, keeping pets leashed and away from the water, and not throwing sticks or rocks in the river
- Bears may be fishing for salmon as they bulk up for winter — if you encounter a bear, keep your distance and remain calm
- Always keep our streams clean by never littering and ensuring ONLY water goes down our storm drains
Please note: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) regulates and monitors fishing during the spawning season, not the City. You can report fisheries violations to them by calling 1-800-465-4336 or emailing [email protected].
