The City of Port Coquitlam is inviting children and youth to participate in the cherished tradition of May Days by joining the Royal Party or performing in school Maypole dances. Applications are open, but the deadline to apply is fast approaching—January 12, 2025.
Children in Grades 1 through 5 can apply to be part of this year’s Royal Party, selected through a random draw. Flower Girls and Junior Lancers are chosen from Grades 1 and 2, while Princesses and Lancers are selected from Grades 4 and 5.
Applications for the Royal Party are being accepted online at portcoquitlam.ca/maydays until January 12, 2025.
Royal party members will participate in:
- Hip hop dance practices: Wednesdays and Fridays beginning February 5 until May 2 at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC). No practices during spring break.
- Flower girls and Junior Lancers will practice from 4:00 to 4:40 p.m.
- Princesses and Lancers from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.
- Royal Party Selection Luncheon: March 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Opening Ceremony Rehearsal: May 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- May Day Opening Ceremony performances: May 4 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
- Rotary May Day Parade – May 10 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
School Maypole Dances
Elementary schools in Port Coquitlam will be performing the Maypole dances during the May Days opening ceremony on Sunday May 4, 2025. Students in grades 3 to 5 who live in Port Coquitlam are encouraged to join their school’s maypole team. Maypole practices will be coordintated by the schools. About May Days
The tradition of May Day royalty in Port Coquitlam began in 1923 with the crowning of the first May Queen.
Over the years, May Days has grown into a week-long festival celebrating spring with the Rotary May Day Parade, outdoor activities, and a variety of artistic performances and displays.
This year’s May Days festival will take place from May 4 to 10, 2025, with additional event details to be announced closer to the date.
