Be A Grate Neighbour! Clear Your Catch Basin And Help Prevent Flooding

News

Port Coquitlam residents are encouraged to support neighbourhood flood prevention by taking part in the City’s “Be a Grate Neighbour” campaign. With the fall rain season underway, residents can make a meaningful difference by safely clearing leaves and debris from catch basins fronting their homes to help keep water flowing and streets safe.

Catch basins can be viewed on an interactive map at portcoquitlam.ca/catchbasin, making it easy to locate the ones adjacent to your property. Clearing even a small amount of debris can reduce pooling during storms and support the City’s broader stormwater management efforts.

Residents can enter to win one of three $75 gift card to a local business by submitting a photo of their cleared catch basin. Entries can be submitted through the City’s online form at portcoquitlam.ca/catchbasin, or by tagging the City on Facebook (@portcoquitlam), X (@CityofPoCo), Bluesky (@cityofpoco.bsky.social), or Instagram (@cityofpoco).
The contest ends December 7.

The City reminds residents to clear only what can be done safely, remove loose leaves and debris, avoid stepping onto the roadway, and do not attempt to lift catch basin grates or move heavy materials. Any concerns about flooding, blocked catch basins that cannot be safely cleared, or other infrastructure concerns, report issues at portcoquitlam.ca/report or via the PoCo Sort & Report app.

The campaign runs through November, with prize winners announced in December. This initiative forms part of the City’s ongoing work to strengthen storm preparedness and encourage shared responsibility for community safety.
