Port Coquitlam, BC - April 9, 2024...The City of Port Coquitlam invites residents to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 27 at Lions Park featuring environmental education booths, food trucks, music and more.
The free family-friendly drop-in event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. rain or shine at Lions Park. The City will combine Earth Week and Earth Day celebrations coinciding with the City-wide garage sale on April 27. The City is encouraging residents to take part in the activities and initiatives that recognize Earth Day in April.
"This celebration will serve as an opportunity to explore how we can all do our part in Port Coquitlam. Implementing small but impactful changes will help foster positive outcomes."," said Mayor Brad West. "I encourage residents to take part in this event and learn more how they can continue to help our community become greener, healthier and more sustainable."
Tree Giveaway
The first 50 residents will receive a free tree to plant in their yards as part of the Earth Day Celebration. The giveaway will feature four different types of trees to choose from:
- Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple)
- Betula Dakota pinnacle (birch tree)
- Liquidamber stryciflua "Worplesdon" (Worplesdon Sweetgum)
- Fagus sylvatica Dawyckii Gold (Dawyck Gold European Beech)
Residents must show proof of residence for the tree giveaway. Details of the types of trees are available online at portcoquitlam.ca/earthday. The trees are limited and will be given away on a first come first served basis.
Purchase a Rain Water Barrel
City staff will offer rain water barrels for sale at $56.00 each (incl.tax). The rain barrels have a capacity of 200L and provide a sustainable method to keep gardens watered and flourishing.
Visit Interactive Info Booths
City staff will host interactive tables with games, giveaways and resources including information on invasive species, sorting it right, green waste, City information and more.
Visit the Coquitlam River Watershed Society booth. The Coquitlam River Watershed Society coordinates and implements activities to promote the long-term health and sustainability of the watershed.
Eat at Food Trucks
A selection of food trucks will be serving up delicious and sustainable cuisines with biodegradable food packaging to reduce their environmental impact.

"It is important to come together and show our contribution of taking care of the environment in our community," said Cllr. McCurrach, council designate for arts, culture and heritage and environment "This event is a reminder of the simple ways we can be eco-friendlier and reduce waste."
