Port Coquitlam, BC – March 30, 2026… The City of Port Coquitlam invites residents to celebrate Earth Day at a free, family-friendly event on Saturday, April 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. rain or shine, at the Minnekhada Middle School Parking Lot, 1930 Laurier Avenue.
The drop-in event will feature environmental education booths, giveaways and practical opportunities for residents to support sustainable living at home.
“Earth Day is an opportunity for residents to connect with the small actions that can make a meaningful difference in our community,” said Mayor Brad West. “Whether it is planting a tree, using compost in the garden or finding new ways to reduce waste, this event helps make sustainable choices more accessible for Port Coquitlam residents.”
Residents can take advantage of several Earth Day initiatives during event:
Free Bark Mulch
Residents can collect free bark mulch to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature for healthier plant growth. Proof of Port Coquitlam residency is required. Quantities are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
- Free Compost Giveaway
Residents are invited to bring their own shovels and pails to collect free compost. This initiative highlights the City’s ongoing waste-reduction efforts, which have diverted more than 6,470 tonnes of yard and food waste. Proof of Port Coquitlam residency is required. Quantities are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.
- Affordable Trees For Your Yard
Residents can purchase trees for $25 each. Tree options include:
Star Magnolia
Japanese Stewartia
Bald Cypress
European Hornbeam
Each tree purchase includes a free watering bag. Trees are limited and available on a first come, first served basis at the event. Proof of Port Coquitlam residency is required.
- Rain Barrel Sale
Residents can purchase a 200-litre rain barrel for $56, including tax. Rain barrels offer a practical way to conserve water and support sustainable gardening. Rain barrels are limited and available on a first come, first served basis at the event. Proof of Port Coquitlam residency is required.
“This event gives residents simple, practical ways to support a greener community,” said Cllr. McCurrach, council designate for environment. “From learning at the educational booths to taking home compost, mulch, trees or a rain barrel, there are many easy steps people can take to make a positive environmental impact.”
Free Child Car Seat Clinic
Coquitlam RCMP is teaming up with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia and the British Columbia Automobile Association for a free child car seat clinic as part of the event. Certified technicians will check car seat installations and provide guidance, education and support to help parents and caregivers ensure their child’s car seat is installed and used correctly.
The drive-thru clinic will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Each session will take approximately 45 minutes, with certified Child Passenger Safety educators auditing car and booster seat installations and providing guidance, education and free takeaways.
