City of Port Coquitlam Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Covered Multi-Sport Facility

News

PORT COQUITLAM, BC – October 5, 2026… The City of Port Coquitlam marked a major milestone today with a ceremonial groundbreaking for its new covered Multi-Sport Facility, which will expand year-round, dry floor sport opportunities for local teams, athletes and community groups.

“This is a big investment in sport, recreation and our community,” said Mayor Brad West. “We want Port Coquitlam to be a place where people of all ages have great opportunities to be active, try something new and connect with one another. This new covered facility will mean more playing time, more programs and more opportunities year-round, while creating another great community space that residents, local organizations and families will enjoy for generations.”

Mayor Brad West was joined at the ceremony by Mike Farnworth, a valued community member, members of Port Coquitlam City Council, representatives from the PoCo Saints and project partners.

The facility will feature a covered, lit playing surface with a floor lined for lacrosse and the flexibility to host a wide range of other sports and community programs. Built with mass timber, a sustainable material that reflects the natural setting along the Coquitlam River, the project also includes new change rooms and washrooms, spectator seating, improved parking and site access, pathway connections for walking and cycling, and new trees and landscaping.

The project has an estimated cost of $12.45 million. In October 2024, the Government of British Columbia committed $3 million toward the facility's design and construction complementing the City’s previously approved capital budget allocations.

The facility is located in the Shaughnessy Bike Park area along Shaughnessy Street. The site was selected from more than a dozen locations reviewed across the City for its access, connections to the surrounding area and revitalization potential. The City is developing a plan to relocate and revitalize the bike park and will share it with the community.

Construction is well underway, with the first phase of site servicing and grading now wrapping up. Construction of the building itself is expected to begin in the coming months, with completion anticipated in fall 2027.
