In 2016, the Kwikwetlem First Nation (KFN) filed a land claim involving several properties within the region. The areas identified in the claim include portions of land owned by the Province of British Columbia, the Metro Vancouver Regional District, and sites owned by the City of Port Coquitlam - Gates Park and several smaller lots collectively known as South Shaughnessy.
This litigation is currently in abeyance as a provincially led process takes place. Throughout this process, the City of Port Coquitlam remains committed to vigorously defending public ownership of its municipal lands.
At this time, there are no civil claims initiated by any First Nations involving private property within the City of Port Coquitlam. While the City recognizes public concern resulting from recent media coverage of the Cowichan/Richmond case, it is important to note that no private lands within Port Coquitlam are currently the subject of litigation.
The City will continue to closely monitor the Cowichan proceedings and any related developments, and will protect public and private property rights within its jurisdiction.
