Join us for a fun, interactive outdoor open house at the Public Works Yard on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and get an insider's look at the people behind the City of Port Coquitlam’s vital Public Works services. In honour of National Public Works Week (May 18–24, 2025), under the theme "People, Purpose, Presence," discover the purpose that drives the maintenance and servicing of our City – from water to waste, roads to parks – and witness the everyday presence of these essential services in our community.
Held at the Public Works Yard (1737 Broadway Street, entrance off Cameron Avenue), this free event offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how Port Coquitlam is maintained and serviced. Learn about the dedicated teams responsible for waste collection, the upkeep and improvement of streets and sidewalks, the care of parks, trails, and public spaces, the functioning of the sewer, water, and drainage systems, and the management of the City's fleet.
Experience the people, purpose, and presence of Public Works through engaging, festival-style activities for all ages:
- Hands-on Displays: Connect with the people who deliver each Public Works service and understand the purpose behind their work. Play the waste-sorting game, find out the journey of drinking water, learn about the snow removal program, get tips from the City’s gardeners, and more.
- Heavy Equipment Showcase: Witness the impressive presence of heavy machinery in action, including a garbage truck, backhoe, and snowplow as well as sign-making and traffic signal demonstrations.
- Free Children’s Activities: Enjoy activities for the whole family, including balloon animals, buggy rides, flower planting, and tractor-pulled hay rides.
- BBQ by Donation: Support SHARE Family and Community Services with a delicious BBQ.
- FREE Compost: Bring your containers to take some home.
- Giveaways and More!
Neighbourhood Scavenger Hunt: Exploring Our City's Public Works
The entire City is turning into a scavenger hunt! Discover the presence of Public Works in our neighbourhoods. There are seven locations, and the City will be posting clues to its social media channels beginning May 18 to kickoff Public Works Week until May 24. All residents need to do is go to that location and post a selfie, tagging the City via social media or uploading via the City website. Once all seven have been submitted, you’ll be entered to win a prize.
This year's theme, "People, Purpose, Presence," truly reflects the dedication of public works professionals who contribute to and enhance the quality of life for all residents of Port Coquitlam.
