The City of Port Coquitlam is excited to kick off its 102nd annual May Days with the Opening Ceremony on Sunday, May 4 at 3:00 p.m. Join us at the Jon Baillie Arena inside the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) at 2150 Wilson Avenue.
Continuing a much-loved tradition that began back in 1923, the Opening Ceremony will feature the presentation of the 2025 Royal Party and the colourful ribbons of the Maypole dance performed by local children.
Doors will open at 2:30 p.m., and the first 102 people through the door will receive a free one-day Recreation pass. Don’t miss the start to the annual May Days celebrations.
About May Days
May Days’ roots go back centuries. In ancient times, May was a time of outdoor celebration, and May Day was celebrated by the Romans with flower-decked parades honouring Flora, their goddess of flowers. In England, village youth would collect flowering boughs to decorate hawthorn trees – the predecessors to the Maypole.
Port Coquitlam first celebrated May Day as a community in 1923, with Maypole dancing and the crowning of a May Queen. The festival has evolved and grown over the years, it has maintained many of its original traditions, including Maypole dancing and the crowning of local children as May Day “royalty” – a May Queen and Ambassador along with a Royal Party.
