Jon Baillie Arena Set To Host WHL Pre-Season Games

PORT COQUITLAM, BC - June 24, 2023... The City of Port Coquitlam will once again host the Western Hockey League (WHL) pre-season games this fall, featuring Vancouver Giants versus Victoria Royals at the Jon Baillie Arena in the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC). This event will coincide with Car Free Day on September 7.

The Jon Baillie Arena will host two WHL games:

  • Sat. Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m. Vancouver Giants vs. Victoria Royals
  • Sun. Sept. 8 at 2:00 p.m. Vancouver Giants vs. Victoria Royals

"We are thrilled to once again host WHL pre-season games at the Jon Baillie Arena. This event, coinciding with our popular Car Free Day on September 7, combines our love for sports and community celebration." Mayor Brad West said. "We can't wait to welcome fans for an exhilarating day of hockey and car-free festivities."

The Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) is perched on the edge of the downtown and is a vibrant community hub offering a wide variety of new and enhanced amenities.

Located at 2150 Wilson Ave. housing three arenas (including a spectator arena with seating of 751 with a total capacity in the viewing area of 843), a gymnasium, a leisure pool, a fitness centre and studios, a children's area for City Preschool and childminding, Terry Fox Library and a concession with snacks and drinks that overlooks the spectator arena, the large Mabbett Hall and other multi-purpose spaces, washrooms and changerooms with universal and accessible options, and underground parking with 425 spots and a pick-up/drop-off area.

The main entrance on Wilson Avenue greets visitors with plaza seating and gardens. Access is also possible from the south side known as the Terry Fox Hometown Square, which features seating, lawn, sport courts (including pickleball), playgrounds, a walking path, community gardens, a outdoor spray park connected to the leisure pool and an outdoor gym (equipment coming later this summer). A café in the lobby and active rehab/physiotherapy near the fitness centre.

Tickets for the pre-season games will be made available via the WHL website at chl.ca/whl. Tickets for each game will be sold by the individual WHL teams.

Car Free Day

Exploring downtown Port Coquitlam has never been easier via transit, walking or cycling. Celebrate this free festival that will feature two stage areas, featuring food and beverages, free entertainment, displays, family activities and more are part of the day's fun.

The second annual Car Free Day event presented by Translink will be held on McAllister Avenue in downtown Port Coquitlam on Saturday, Sept., 7 from noon to 8:00 p.m. Stay up to date at portcoquitlam.ca/carfreeday.
