Port Coquitlam residents are invited to connect with neighbours and celebrate community spirit by hosting a Block Party this spring or summer.
Block Parties are a simple way for neighbours to come together, build relationships and enjoy shared spaces close to home. Events can take place in a variety of locations, including townhouse common areas, residential streets or cul-de-sacs, back alleys, backyards, City parks or in front of apartment buildings.
Building on the success of last year’s program, where 41 Block Parties brought more than 1,500 neighbours together across Port Coquitlam, residents are once again encouraged to organize their own neighbourhood gathering. Applications open May 13 and can be submitted online at portcoquitlam.ca/blockparty.
The first 60 approved Block Parties will receive a $150 Freshmart gift certificate to help cover the cost of food and party supplies, along with a PoCo Party Connection Kit brought to you by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) Human Connection Project, that includes a frisbee, stickers, a City-branded barbecue apron, beach ball, sidewalk chalk, and more fun ways to get to know your neighbours. Block Party formats are selected by residents and may include a barbecue, picnic, potluck, park gathering or other neighbourhood activity. Events can be held throughout the spring and summer, including afternoons or evenings.
Through the application process, organizers may also request a visit from Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services through the Hot Summer Nights program. This gives participants an opportunity to see a fire truck up close and learn more about home fire safety.
Organizers may also apply to have a local street or cul-de-sac closed for their event. Free road barriers are available to support approved street closures, helping make neighbourhood gatherings safer and easier to organize.
Residents are encouraged to share photos from their Block Parties by tagging the City on social media or emailing photos to [email protected].
The City thanks the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) Human Connection Project, this year’s Gold Sponsor, and Community Sponsors Freshmart, Dynamic Equipment Rentals and the Downtown Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association (PoCo BIA) for supporting neighbourhood connection across Port Coquitlam through the Block Party program.
