Port Coquitlam Seniors Week Kicks Off June 1-7

Seniors are a vital part of our community, and their contributions make our City a wonderful place to live, work and play.  

The City is inviting Port Coquitlam seniors to celebrate B.C. Seniors Week from June 1 – 7 at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC), Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (HC) and Leigh Square. Seniors will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of free festivities and programs. 

Featured Seniors Week Activities and Events 

Monday, June 1 | 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  

  • Silver Chord Choir Performance –10:00-11:00 a.m.: Come and enjoy our Silver Chord Choir as they fill the PCCC lobby with music to kick-off Seniors Week. Free. No registration required. 

  • Terry Fox Library Live Well with the Library, Experience the Playground – 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Terry Fox Library): The Library has items that help us live well as we age. —for the mind, for the home, to keep us active—and at no cost. Join us to experience the Playground, including the Blu-ray player, solar panels, nature kit, ukuleles and so much more!  Did we mention there will be treats? No registration required. 

  • Learn to Bollywood Dance – 1:15 – 2:15 p.m. (PCCC) - Guided by an instructor, you will learn simple choreography set to trending Bollywood hits. No Bollywood dance experience needed. Registration full. To join the waitlist, visit portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity #128805) or call 604-924.7529 (PLAY) 

  • Intergenerational Table Tennis – Round Robin – 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (PCCC): Want to switch things up with your table tennis game? Come drop in on this friendly round robin style event in collaboration with the Youth Team. Registration required online at portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity #124041) 

Tuesday, June 2 | 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. 

  • Donald Storywalk – 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. (PCCC): An Arts and Culture staff will take you for a walk down the Donald Pathway showcasing the illustrated story panels along the way. The current Donald Storywalk is called “Tiny Stories about Big Adventures” illustrated by B.C. artist Madeline Berger. Registration required online at portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity # 129614)
  • Container Gardening – 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (PCCC): Don’t let limited space stop you from enjoying the benefits and rewards of gardening.  Bring your gloves and a shovel if you have one; all other materials provided. Registration full. To join the waitlist, visit portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity # 129612) or call 604-927-7529 (PLAY).
  • Crime Prevention 101 for Seniors -1:00 – 2:00 p.m. (PCCC): Presented by Community Police, learn practical tips to keep yourself and your home safe. This presentation will cover simple prevention strategies for your home including safety tips and the ways landscaping and environment design can help you stay safe. Registration required online at portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity #128729).

Wednesday, June 3 | 9:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m.  

  • Learn to Play Crib - 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (PCCC): This session will explain how to play cribbage step by step, from dealing cards to scoring points.  All levels are welcome. Registration required online at portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity # 128673) 
  • Drop-in Swim 10:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m. (PCCC and HC): A free drop-in swim for seniors at either Recreation Centres. Registration required online at portcoquitlam.ca/register (activity # 129183 for HC and #129182 for PCCC) 

Thursday, June 4 | 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

  • Seniors Week Luncheon 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. (PCCC): Join Mayor and Council for this free luncheon with food, dessert, prizes and a live band to celebrate Seniors Week. Friday, June 5 | 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Mini Health Fair for Family Caregivers 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. (PCCC): Presented by the Wilson Seniors Advisory Association and the Adult Cognitive Wellness Centre, come check out this free mini health fair featuring resources and information about services available for family caregivers. No registration required.

Other Offerings and Supports for Seniors 

In addition to Seniors Week activities, the City offers a variety of ongoing programs and services for adults 60+: 

  • 80+ One City Pass Super Senior: No admission and membership fees for super seniors 80 years and older to support active aging, increase participation and reduce barriers. Available to Port Coquitlam residents.
  • Seniors Membership: Those 60 years and better can become a member and receive discounted pricing on pre-registered programs, discounted pricing at the Wilson Kitchen, reduced drop-in Seniors program fees and more. Visit portcoquitlam.ca/onecitypass
