Port Coquitlam, BC - NOV. 23, 2023...The City of Port Coquitlam continues to ensure that everyone in Port Coquitlam has an opportunity to take part in the City's recreation programs without financial barriers.
Participating in recreational activities can be expensive. In Port Coquitlam, there are several options available in which individuals can apply for financial assistance to help off-set the costs associated with recreation, sports, arts and camp participation.
Applications for the 2024 intake open on Fri. Dec. 1 at portcoquitlam.ca/financialassistance. In 2022, over 827 residents received financial assistance and for 2023 the City has issued over $39,000 in subsidies for 1189 residents to access recreation programs.
"We will continue to work to ease some of the financial hardships being faced by many families in Port Coquitlam. We want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to take part in our recreation programs and this initiative helps make that happen," said Mayor Brad West. "I am proud of the work we continue to do and that this program removes financial barriers while enhancing community and family connectedness."
The City's financial assistance supports active lifestyles and healthy communities by offering inclusive recreation programs and services at a reduced cost for individuals. The program provides a variety of supports and resources to ensure all residents have the opportunity to get involved in recreation and arts programs. Through the Financial Assistance Program, eligible families can receive a 75 per cent discount on activities, including camps.
"The city offers a wide range of recreation programs and the staff work hard to deliver them each season" says Cllr. Paige Petriw, council designate for community experience, celebrations, events and inclusion. "The city's programs are designed for those of all ages and abilities and whether you're seven or 70, there's something for everyone."
If financial circumstances make it difficult to pay a full fee for programs, residents may qualify for financial assistance. All recipients receive a One City Pass for the duration of the approved calendar year, which provides free entry to drop-in swimming, skating, fitness, racquetball/squash and all-age gym sports across the City. Adult recipients can choose to receive a total of $200 per calendar year and a 75 per cent discount toward the cost of recreation programs and memberships. Children and youth recipients (0 - 18 years old) can also choose to receive a total of $500 per calendar year and a 75 per cent discount toward the cost of recreation programs and memberships.
The City also offers the following assistance:
