Heritage Resource Inventory

There are many places in Port Coquitlam that are valued for their association with our community’s history. These places include the buildings and other structures, streetscapes, archaeological sites, landscapes and monuments that contribute to a sense of place and sustainability and help define our unique character.

In 2012, Port Coquitlam compiled a comprehensive inventory of heritage resources with input from residents. The process to create this inventory included soliciting information about places and structures that community members identified as valuable and recording why they considered them to be valuable. Our Heritage Resource Inventory has six themes which reflect the multiplicity of heritage values expressed by the community:

  • Three Rivers, encompassing the City’s diverse natural environment and stories of human response, including heritage trees
  • Railway Hub and Highway Routes, addressing the formative influences of transportation developments and dominance  of rivers, rail and road networks
  • Sustaining Lands, including our relationship with the ancient village sites of the Kwikwetlem First Nation (kʷikʷəƛ̓əm), early European settlements and ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park
  • Tenacity and Prosperity, highlighting the pioneering travails of settlement
  • Small Town to Growing City, outlining the history of Port Coquitlam from its beginning as a rail junction to its current place in Greater Vancouver
  • Hometown and Heroes, recognizing the attachments of citizens to the community through our historic institutions and the tales of notable citizens.

The Port Coquitlam Heritage Resource Inventory is updated annually.

Port Coquitlam’s trees are a valuable resource to our community. Trees help tell stories of our history.

  • has value to the general community.
