Kingsway Avenue Upgrades

Kingsway Avenue is undergoing essential upgrades to address existing traffic challenges, improve safety, and enhance accessibility for all users.

Currently, most of Kingsway features single travel lanes and inconsistent active transportation facilities. As a vital part of TransLink's major road network, these phased improvements are already delivering results, with Phase 1 – including a new multi-use pathway along the north side – successfully completed in December 2024, and Phase 2 - including lane reconfigurations - successfully completed in November 2025.

The new multi-use path significantly enhances active transportation options in Port Coquitlam, providing improved accessibility and connectivity for residents and visitors; the lane reconfigurations and intersection improvements along the corridor will enhance the efficient flow and movement of traffic through the corridor to better accommodate for increased demand and reduce overall delays.

Planning and Timing

The City completed a transportation study, conceptual and detailed designs in 2019 and 2020 to address existing and future traffic performance, new development, increasing truck traffic and queuing, property access/egress, traffic signal operations, business parking and lack of active transportation facilities such as paths and bicycle lanes.

This project will take a Phased approach to construction, as funding becomes available for each given year through to 2026.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 Successfully Completed

The initial phase of the Kingsway Avenue upgrades, which included a new multi-use pathway along the north side, was successfully completed in December 2024. This new pathway has significantly enhanced active transportation options in Port Coquitlam, providing improved accessibility and connectivity for residents and visitors.

The second phase included curb realignment and lane reconfiguration along the corridor from Kelly Avenue to west of McLean Avenue and from Coast Meridian Road to Mary Hill Bypass. Other improvements included the inclusion of a shared center lane, a new sidewalk along the south side, drainage improvements and roadway lighting upgrades. This phase was successfully completed in November 2025.

Upcoming Final Phase

The Kingsway Avenue upgrade project will continue with a phased approach to construction through to 2026, building upon the success of Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Phase 3 Construction 2026

With the successful completion of Phase 1 and Phase 2, the City is pleased to announce that construction for Phase 3 of the Kingsway Avenue upgrades is anticipated to start in Spring 2026. Phase 3 will primarily focus on the sections of Kingsway Avenue between McLean Avenue and Coast Meridian Road. The scope of work generally includes:

  • McLean Avenue and Broadway Street intersection improvements.
  • Additional/deletion of turn lanes and through lanes as required.
  • Intersection signal upgrades.
  • Curb realignment and lane reconfiguration.
  • Inclusion of a shared center left turn lane.
  • Sidewalk installation along the south side with driveway tie-ins as required.
  • Drainage improvements.
  • Roadway and intersection lighting upgrades.

The contractor actively working on the project will maintain communication with residents and businesses in a manner similar to the communications during Phase 1 and Phase 2. Please note that depending on your location along Kingsway Avenue, work may not immediately take place adjacent to your property.

Construction Impacts

As is typical with construction of this nature, residents and businesses along Kingsway Avenue will experience temporary impacts, however the City and its contractors will work to minimize inconvenience whenever possible.

In an effort to minimize impacts to local residents, businesses and commuters, a majority of works near the two major intersections will be completed during the evening hours, however daytime impacts are still to be expected. Commuters are highly encouraged to use alternate routes when possible during the course of construction. Other expected construction-related impacts may include:

  • Temporary disruptions to traffic flow with some waits and detours.
  • Changes to property access where necessary, with advance notice and clear signage provided by the contractor.
  • Temporary alterations to boulevards, which are the areas between the roadway and property lines.

Planned Features

The City will make the following improvements to Kingsway Avenue once all phases are complete:

  • One travel lane in each direction and a shared centre turn lane for turning in and out of businesses
  • Parking lane on the south side and parking pockets on the north side (where possible)
  • Intersection improvements, including additional turning lanes where warranted
  • Right in/right out intersection at Tyner Street
  • New sidewalk on the south side
  • Multi-use pathway and planted boulevard on the north side
  • Fibre optics and new streetlighting
  • Landscape improvements

Parking and Pedestrian Safety

Based on a parking assessment of demand and needs along the Kingsway Avenue corridor, the City is proposing curb extensions on the north side for the safety of pedestrians using the new multi-use path and to provide better visibility for drivers.

Parking will be provided in between the curb extensions on the north side, with minimal impact on the number of available spaces. Parking will continue to be available along Kingsway's south side.

Consultation

The City is seeking to better understand the needs of property and business owners and operators to ensure they are incorporated in the design.

Individual in-person/virtual meetings or phone calls can be set up to discuss specific questions, concerns and needs. Property and business owners are invited to contact Engineering & Public Works at 604.927.5420 or [email protected] to set up a meeting.
