You can take your recycling to a Recycle BC (formerly Multi-Material BC) depot for free – including many items that are not accepted in the blue cart, such as Styrofoam, aerosol cans, non-refundable glass and small electronics.

Accepted Items at Recycle BC Depots

Recycle BC depots accept all the items you can put in your blue cart, as well as the items below.

Plastic Bags and Overwrap

  • Clear or opaque retail bags for groceries or dry cleaning
  • Clear or opaque bags for bread, newspapers and flyers
  • Clear bags for produce and dry bulk foods
  • Frozen vegetable bags
  • Outer wrap for bulk paper products and soft drink and can flats
  • Water softener, salt, and garden product bags
  • Outer milk bags and pouches
  • Diaper and feminine hygiene product outer bags
  • Pre-washed salad bags

Plastic Foam Packaging – White and Coloured

  • Foam containers and trays used for meat
  • Foam egg cartons
  • Foam clamshells for take-out food
  • Foam cups and bowls
  • Foam cushion packaging to protect electronics, small appliances, etc.

Glass – Non-refundable

  • Emptied and rinsed clear or coloured non-refundable glass bottles and jars
Not Accepted at Recycle BC Depots

Recycle BC depots do not accept the following items below.

Plastic Bags and Overwrap

  • Crinkly cellophane wrap for tea, floral arrangements, etc.
  • Shrink wrap for meat, poultry, fish, vegetables or cheese
  • Kitchen stretch wrap
  • Zipper-lock bags
  • Plastic shipping envelopes
  • Biodegradable or compostable plastic bags
  • Multi-layer or laminated plastic film
  • Plastic bubble packaging
  • Lumber or construction wrap

Plastic Foam Packaging – White and Coloured

  • Liquid-absorbing pads used in trays for meat, poultry, fish, etc.
  • Shrink wrap for meat, poultry, fish or cheese
  • Foam peanuts, packing chips or noodles
  • Blue or pink foam board insulation

Glass – Non-refundable

  • Glasses or dishes, window glass or mirrors
  • Ceramic mugs or other ceramic products
  • Deposit glass bottles (take to ReturnIt depot for deposit refund)
  • Light bulbs
